The Swiss publishing house Niggli Verlag celebrates its 60th anniversary in the year 2010. Founded by Arthur Niggli in Teufen in 1950, the firm soon acquired a reputation that extended far beyond the Swiss borders. As a small publisher, Niggli began by specialising in art and architecture. He published books on great European artists such as Gropius, Le Corbusier, Kadinsky and Picasso.
At the end of the 50s, Niggli branched out with key works of Swiss graphic design and typography that are still available today. All these books acquired classic status, some of them ran to ten editions and some were translated into as many as seven languages.
In 1992 the company was taken over by Viktor Heer, in whose print shop Niggli’s books had always been produced.
From 1995 to 2012, Niggli Verlag has been managed by the art historian Dr. J. Christoph Bürkle; his successor was in 2012 Cornelia Mechler and will be from April 2013 on Andrea Wiegelmann. Niggli still focusses on the fields of architecture, design, typography and art. The long tradition implies responsibility and challenge at the same time. Niggli Verlag aspires to produce aesthetically pleasing books made to an exceptional high standard of quality.
The success of this concept can be measured not only by the increasing number of books sold, but also by the numerous prizes awarded to the company: the “The Most Beautiful Swiss Books“ and “The Most Beautiful Books from all over the World“ prizes, awards for German architecture books DAM, “if communication design“ awards, the DDC competition “Gute Gestaltung 10“ (good design 10), and many others.
In addition, Niggli Verlag also produces a prestigious periodical. The architectural journal “archithese” was launched in 1972 and has since appeared every two months, reporting on current theory and practise from the perspectives of architects and laypeople. In 2007, Viktor Heer, owner of the publishing house Niggli Verlag, also took the publishing house Benteli Verlag. The focus of the publishing house lies on art and photography. Of main interest is the 20th and 21st century.
On October 1st, 2009, bsmediagroup was founded by Markus Bättig and Daniel Stierli, which, being one of the biggest media enterprises in Eastern Switzerland, now comprises the companies Heer Druck, Niggli Verlag, Benteli Verlag, archithese and the newspaper Neuer Anzeiger in a Holding Company.
